Baptized Joseph Henri Paul Gagnon. Son of Arthur Gagnon and Marie Larochelle of St. Romuald. Husband of Georgette Moreau of Charny, Lévis. Childless, she married Rosario Asselin in her second marriage.

When he enlisted in the Royal 22nd Regiment, he stated that he was born in 1915. He married on September 26, 1942, in Charny, Lévis, Quebec. He sailed for Great Britain on July 15, 1940, and arrived in Glasgow, Scotland, on August 1. He was part of the Protective Unit from September 14 to October 25, 1940. Ill and hospitalized, he was repatriated to Canada on November 25, 1941. Hospitalized upon his arrival, he died on May 31, 1943, of pulmonary tuberculosis and enteric tuberculosis in St-Romuald. His death was recognized as being due to military service. He had 635 days of service, including 488 days overseas.
