Location:

On Vancouver Island in Ross Bay Cemetery, British Columbia, is the VICTORIA MEMORIAL. The cemetery holds 133 war graves and contains, in a separate plot, the Naval Memorial which consists simply of a square block of granite bearing the names of 39 officers and men who were lost or buried at sea in the Pacific Ocean. Of these, 36 were from the HMCS Galiano which went down on October 30, 1918. Behind the VICTORIA MEMORIAL stands a Cross of Sacrifice.

  • Other– His Majesty’s Trawler Apley was a 222 ton vessel built by Smith's Dock Co. Ltd. (South Bank), Middlesbrough, England in 1908 for fishing, and was based in Milford Haven, Wales.  She was converted to a minesweeper for naval service during World War I. 
HMT Apley was one of 47 trawlers taken up from Milford Haven by the Royal Navy during WW I, of which 11 were lost during the war.  Apley was 222 tons and was armed with a single 3-pounder gun for service as a minesweeper.  She was sunk by a German mine on 6 December 1917 off Worthing in the English Channel; during which 11 sailors were killed including Stroker James Lancaster, RNCVR.
  • Inscription– The panel on the Halifax Memorial at Point Pleasant in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, on which James Lancaster's name is inscribed.  James Lancaster was the husband of Mary Ann Lancaster of Williams Siding, Nelson, British Columbia, Canada; he was serving as a stoker in Her Majesty's Trawler Apley, conducting minesweeping operations when the ship struck a German mine in the English Channel off Worthing and sank.
