Son of Bernard (Berno) and Annie (nee Fay) Holland, of East Baltic, Prince Edward Island.
Brother of Private Joseph Holland, who died during service with the Canadian Infantry (Nova Scotia Regiment). Uncle of Lieutenant Thomas Vincent Holland, who died during service in the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve.
Two other brothers, Philip and John (Jack) Kyran, also enlisted in the First World War. Philip served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force and John served with the U.S. Foresters. Joseph's other brothers and sisters were Peter, Bernard, Edward, James, Marcella and Anne Jane.
