Pont du Hem is a hamlet situated on the main road from La Bassee to Estaires. Follow the D 947 from La Bassee to Estaires for 10 kilometres and the PONT-DU-HEM MILITARY CEMETERY lies on the left hand side of the road 5 kilometres short of Estaires.

Lieutenant Colonel George Brenton Laurie (RMC 1883) was the son of Lt. Gen. Laurie and Mrs. Laurie, of Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was educated at Galt Collegiate Institute, Ontario, and at the Picton Academy, from whence he passed into the Royal Military College, Kingston, Canada, in 1883. He was the husband of Florence C. V. Vere-Laurie, of Carlton Hall, Newark, Notts. His elder brother 134 Captain John Halliburton Laurie (RMC 1884) fell in the Boer War on Apr 12, 1901, and he himself saw active service in the Sudan and in South Africa, before he landed in France to take his share in the great World War. He served with the Royal Irish Rifles. He died on March 12, 1915 at 47 years of age. He was buried in the Pont du Hem Military Cemetery in Nord, France.
