Son of Allan James and Janet Hook, of Cobble Hill, Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

Brother of Second Lieutenant Robin Hook, serving with the same regiment, who lost his life on August 7, 1915 and Lieutenant Geoffrey Hook, Royal Air Force, who died of illness on October 4, 1918. Robin and Duncan were civil engineers in Canada when the war broke out and they joined the fight.
