Distinguished Conduct Medal, London Gazette No. 29508 dated 14 March 1916, ' For conspicuous gallantry. Lance-Sergeant Jackson and Private Hutchison accompanied the Battalion Grenade Officer into the enemy's trench and remained there reconnoitring for half an hour. Valuable information resulted from this hazardous expedition.' 1914-15 Star

Contalmaison is a village in the Department of the Somme, 6 kilometres east-north-east of Albert. The Sunken Road, from which the cemetery is named, is part of the Contalmaison-Pozieres road, and the cemetery lies a little east of the road.
