Son of John Black and Lillian Eva Currie of Westbank, British Columbia. Brother of Ralph Gordon, Vincent Donald and Velma Lillian. Sgt Currie enlisted in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve and served in the Second World War from 5 October 1943 to 9 January 1946. He attained the rank of Able Seaman and served under service number V-72631. He saw service in Canada, the United Kingdom and the High Seas. He served with the PPCLI until his death. He was single and in civilian life, was employed as a warehouseman.
