Baptized Joseph François Jacques Girard. Son of Almas Girard and Cécile Goyette of Chicoutimi, Quebec. After Cécile's death in 1940, Almas remarried on May 19, 1942, to Alma Thibault. Brother of Orélien, Jen-Rock, Florence, Colette, MairPaul, Candide and Francoise.
On the afternoon of November 23, 1951, Company D of the Royal 22nd Regiment came under attack from at least two Chinese companies supported by artillery. The attacks continued until dawn on the 24th. He was killed in action on November 24 while defending the Kowang-Hi position northeast of Sami-Chon.
His name was inscribed on the cenotaph of the Korean War Memorial in Meadowvale Cemetery, Brampton, Peel, Ontario, erected in 1997 to commemorate the 516 Canadians killed in action between 25 June 1950 and 27 July 1953, as well as on the Korean War Memorial in downtown Ottawa, Ontario. An identical monument can be found at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Pusan (South Korea).
