Baptized Joseph Paul Claude Roland Lafranchise, he served under the name Roland Lafranchise. Son of Charles Troy dit Lafranchise and Alvina (aka Malvina) Turgeon, from Montréal, Québec. Brother of Hector, Jean-Paul, Claire, Eva, Jacqueline and Thérèse.
Enlisted on April 10, 1951, in the Canadian Army Special Force, he was transferred to the 3rd Battalion, Royal 22nd Regiment, on August 15, 1951, and remained there until his departure for Japan on November 3. In South Korea, he transferred to the 2nd Battalion on February 5, 1952, and to the 1st Battalion, Company D, on April 23, 1952. He embarked for South Korea on March 18, 1952, and landed at Pusan. He was killed in action on August 13, 1952, by shrapnel during a clash with Chinese forces. The Canadian brigade was deployed between the villages of Paujolgole and Kojanhari-Saemal, and the regiment was defending the left flank.
His name was inscribed on the cenotaph of the Korean War Memorial in Meadowvale Cemetery, Brampton, Peel, Ontario, erected in 1997 to commemorate the 516 Canadians killed in action between 25 June 1950 and 27 July 1953, as well as on the Korean War Memorial in downtown Ottawa, Ontario. An identical monument can be found at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Pusan (South Korea).
