Son of Gerry Hess of Kitchener, Ontario. Husband of Cynthia Hess-von Kruedener and father of Jonah and Kirsten of Kingston, Ontario. Major Hess-von Kruedener served in Cyprus, the Democratic Republic of Congo, formerly Zaire, and twice in Bosnia before joining the United Nations Truce and Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in October, 2005. Major Hess-von Kruedener had been an infantry officer with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry for 20 years, taking part in United Nations peacekeeping missions in Cyprus and in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
