For more than 45 years, Mr. Jones has dedicated his time, expertise and personal resources to commemorating the Canadian soldiers who fought and sacrificed their lives during the liberation of Northwest Europe.

Mr. Jones has served as a co-organizer of the annual Canadian Liberation March, a commemorative event honouring the Canadian soldiers who fought during the Battle of the Scheldt. Held annually for more than five decades, the event has become an important tradition of remembrance, bringing together participants from Belgium, Canada and beyond to honour the sacrifices made by Canadian liberators.

In 2008, Mr. Jones launched the remembrance initiative “1,000 Maple Leaf Flags for 1,000 Fallen Canadian Soldiers”. The project was created to honour the Canadians buried at the Canadian War Cemetery in Adegem and to raise public awareness of Canada’s role in the liberation of Belgium.

Mr. Jones’ most significant achievement is his leadership role in the creation and continued operation of the For Freedom Museum in Knokke-Heist. Following years of fundraising, planning and historical research, the museum opened in April 2009 and has since become one of the most important centres in Belgium dedicated to the history of the Battle of the Scheldt and Canada’s role in the liberation of Northwest Europe.

His commitment to preserving Canada’s military legacy has also extended to major commemorative projects. In 2025, he participated in the development of the Belgian coastal component of the Liberation Route Europe project, documenting monuments and memorials dedicated to Canadian liberators from the French border to the Netherlands.

Mr. Jones’ efforts have been inspired by a deep personal connection to the history of the Second World War and a lifelong commitment to ensuring that the sacrifices of Canadian Veterans are never forgotten.
