Joël Renaud is passionate about helping Veterans and his community, and he has given the local Royal Canadian Legion and its members a new lease on life.

In 2021, thanks to Joël’s effort, the doors of Branch #062 of The Royal Canadian Legion, which had closed the year before, were reopened. Joël formed a committee of Veterans and set about reviving this over-80-year-old charter and institution. Through hard work, perseverance and exemplary leadership, he overcame financial and political obstacles to restore Branch #062 and its long-standing role as a community wellness centre in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield.

Now at a new location in town, the Legion is a remarkable model of a successful community-based sharing enterprise. Joël has worked tirelessly to support local Veterans, children and the underprivileged. His efforts demonstrate admirable perseverance and deep dedication to those he serves and to his community.

Since the branch became active again, Joël has embraced the cause that is so close to his heart, taking on the files of more than 25 members who required more or less emergency interventions, all of which deserved special attention. We have lost count of the number of hours he has spent on the phone with his many contacts to find a therapist, access to medical treatment, psychological help, and even housing for a homeless Veteran.

Having himself experienced the stress of the transition to civilian life, with all its uncertainties and psychological challenges, he can easily put himself in the shoes of those who come to him for help, thanks to his listening skills. He never stops looking for better-tailored solutions for each case until they receive the services and help they need.

Under his leadership, the Valleyfield branch of The Royal Canadian Legion has regained its leadership role in helping Veterans in the region. Many people have seen their lives improve and change for the better thanks to his help.
