Trevor Godinho is a well-known professional photographer who is using his talent to create the Honour Country Sacrifice project. The goal of this project is to photograph soldiers and Veterans from across the country, highlighting the importance of sacrifice and service. The project works to give the public a glimpse of the humanity and personality of the individual soldier/Veteran in hopes that the public will see themselves and make a real connection with those that served.
Trevor was inspired to create the project from time spent with local Second World War Veterans and more modern Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Veterans during Remembrance Day in 2017. The stories he heard made him wonder what other amazing stories are out there, in danger of being lost, and this inspired his project, Honour Country Sacrifice.
Through Honour Country Sacrifice, Trevor spotlights members of the CAF from the Second World War to current serving members as well as families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The portrait project aims to showcase the diversity in the CAF covering all genders and gender expressions, people of colour, 2SLGBTQI+ and Indigenous communities. Trevor’s goal is to shine a spotlight not just on the institution but the individual Canadians that served and continue to serve.
Since he began the project, Trevor has set up temporary studios across the country and puts out calls for Veterans to schedule a photo session for free and have their stories recorded and shared. His ultimate goal is to highlight the best of Canada by creating a virtual and traveling gallery across the country of 400 Veterans and current serving members. Portraits can presently be seen at the Honour Country Sacrifice website: https://www.honourcountrysacrifice.com
