The Claim Summary Tool (CST) is an AI-enabled tool Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) uses to help process Disability Benefit applications more quickly, so Veterans receive decisions sooner.
What is the Claim Summary Tool?
The Claim Summary Tool (CST) is an artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled tool that VAC uses to support the review of Disability Benefit applications. It organizes the large volume of documents and information in an application and highlights key details, so VAC decision makers can review applications more quickly.
The CST does not make decisions, determine eligibility, or replace human judgement. VAC employees always review the information and make the final decision on every application.
How does it work?
Using artificial intelligence, the CST scans your application and supporting information, identifies key details, and organizes them into a summary. This helps VAC reduce processing time so you can receive decisions faster.
If the summary produced by the CST provides clear information supporting a favourable decision, the application may be finalized more quickly. If an application is not approved based on a review of the summary alone, a VAC decision maker will review the entire file manually before making a determination.
This process makes sure that you continue to receive the benefits to which you are entitled, based on a complete and careful review. The CST does not change the Disability Benefit application process. You can continue to apply and seek help with your application in the same ways:
- Call VAC toll‑free at 1‑866‑522‑2122
- Send a secure message through My VAC Account
- Book an in‑person appointment
Your rights to review or appeal a decision remain the same.
Privacy and responsible use
The CST follows all Government of Canada rules for safe and responsible use of AI. This includes transparency, human oversight, privacy protection, and ongoing monitoring to ensure the tool continues to work accurately and as intended.
The CST operates within VAC's secure systems. Personal and medical information never leaves Canada. The tool does not learn from, store, or reuse personal information.
