Burial/memorial information
Baptized Joseph Alexandre Larocque, he was the son of Domithilde "Mathilde" Sabourin (who died in 1906) and Léon Larocque of Longueuil. His father remarried Sophronie Pigeon in 1908 and died in 1914. When he enlisted, Larocque stated that he had been born in 1893 and named his brother, Auguste Larocque, also of Longueuil, as his next of kin.
Enlisting in the 57th Reserve Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he reported previous service with the 85th Regiment (which became the Maisonneuve Regiment in 1920). He was assigned to the 23rd Reserve Battalion and sailed for Great Britain on July 21, 1915, arriving on July 31. On December 31, he crossed the English Channel and landed in France on January 1, 1916. Upon arrival, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion, which he joined on January 11 while the unit was engaged in combat in the Dickebusch-Kemmel sector near Ypres, Belgium.
Severely wounded in the head while serving in the trenches at Saint-Éloi, near Ypres, he died of his wounds the same day at an advanced post of No. 3 Casualty Clearing Station.
