Son of Arthur Gratton and Marie Hébert, of Ottawa, Ontario.

Enlisted in the 77th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he sailed for Great Britain on October 23, 1915, and landed in Plymouth, England, on October 31. On February 15, 1916, he was assigned to the 23rd Reserve Battalion, and on March 15 of that year, to the 22nd Battalion. On the 17th, he crossed over to France and landed at Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais. He joined his new unit that same day. He was killed in action on May 6, 1917, during the Battle of Fresnoy, Pas-de-Calais.

Neuville-St Vaast is a village 6.5 kilometres north of Arras, a little east of the road from Bethune to Arras. LA TARGETTE BRITISH CEMETERY lies to the south-west of the village on the north-west side of the road to the village of Maroeuil.
