Baptisez Joseph Arthur Gervais. Son of Adolphe Gervais and Célina Hudont dit Beaulieu of Joliette, Québec.

Enlisted in the 22nd Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he sailed for Great Britain on May 20, 1915, and landed in Plymouth, England, on the 29th. On September 15, he crossed the English Channel and landed in Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais, France, that same day. On December 11, he was wounded in action at Kemmel, Belgium, and evacuated to England. On April 25, 1916, he transferred to the 12th Battalion at Shorncliffe, then on May 8 to the 23rd Reserve Battalion at Shorncliffe, before returning to the 22nd Battalion on the 26th. On August 16, 1916, he returned to the front. He was wounded again in combat in the Wimereux sector. On October 22, he returned to his unit. He was killed in action on April 27, 1917, at Petit-Servins during the Battle of Vimy Ridge in the Souchez and Scarpe river sector.

Thelus is a village 7 kilometres north of Arras and BOIS-CARRE BRITISH CEMETERY is about half a mile east of the village on the south side of the D49 road to Bailleul-sire-Berthoult.
