Baptized Joseph-Émile Rail. Son of Sylvestre Réhel (deceased in 1903) and Marguerite Girard (deceased in 1913). He successively declared his brother Jean-Baptiste Rail and Nicolas Réhel, of Barachois-de-Malbaie, as next-of-kin. Please note that this family name changed from « Réhel » to « Rail » at that time, but some decided to keep the old spelling. He stated being born in Gaspé on January 9, 1891 when he enlisted.
