Additional information
Named Henri Claes at birth. Son of Pierre Ludovic Claes (deceased in 1893) and Joane Catherine Heyvaert, of Antwerp, Belgium. Son of Petrus-Ludovicus Claes (deceased in 1893) and Catharina Heyvaert, of Anvers, Belgium. Henri had immigrated with his wife, Léontine VanMaelsake, in 1911 and settled in Coleman, Alberta, where his brother Jean was already installed. He was father of two daughters when he enlisted.

He served for two years in the Belgian army. Enlisted on 23 February 1916 with the 192nd Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he was transferred to the 233rd Battalion on 25 October. On 3 March 1917, he was again transferred to the 178th Battalion and left for England the same day, arriving on the 15th. On the same day, he was transferred to the 10th Reserve Battalion. On 27 May 1917, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion and landed in France on the 28th. From 15 June to 31 July 1917, he was on loan to the 2nd Canadian Entrenchment Battalion.

His battalion was in Brigade support South-East of Agny and sent troops on fatigue duty to improve trenches at Telegraph Hill Switch, near Neuville-Vitasse, where Henri died on duty.

Wailly is a village in the Department of the Pas-de-Calais about 6 kilometres south-west from Arras in the valley of the little river Crinchon. WAILLY ORCHARD CEMETERY stands above the village on its outskirts in part of the old orchard.
