He previously served with the 70th Hull Regiment. Enlisted in the 41st Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he was given the regimental number 416549. Transferred to the 22nd Battalion on 11 May 1915, he was assigned regimental number 62281. On the 20th, he embarked for England, arriving in Plymouth on the 29th. On the following 15 September, at Folkestone, he embarked for France where he landed at Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais, the same day.
Severely wounded during the assault on the village of Courcelette, he was evacuated to No 44 casualty clearing station in Puchevillers, where he died a few days later.

Puchevillers is a village about 19 kilometres north-east of Amiens. The PUCHEVILLERS BRITISH CEMETERY is a little west of the village. The first Commonwealth War Graves Commission signpost is situated by the church in the village.
