WILLIAM HAMILTON MERRITT 1793-1862

A pioneer in the field of transportation, Merritt was born
in Bedford, New York and settled at Twelve Mile Creek (St.
Catharines) with his Loyalist family in 1796. He served
with the provincial cavalry during the War of 1812, then
operated mercantile and milling enterprises here. Primarily
responsible for the construction of the first Welland Canal
(1824-33). Merritt worked tirelessly to promote this ambi-
tious venture, both by raising funds and by enlisting govern-
ment support. During his long tenure in the Legislative As-
sembly (1832-60) he championed freer trade policies and
various transportation projects. In particular he advocated
building a comprehensive system of canals and railways linking
inland waters with the ocean, a scheme which foreshadowed
the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway over 100 years later.

On
lui doit la construction du premier canal Welland (1824-
1833), entreprise à laquelle il travaille sans relâche pour
réunir des fonds et obtenir l'appui du gouvernement. Pendant

A young farmer near Grantham Township before the war, William Merritt was appointed Lieutenant in the Niagara Light Dragoons, a volunteer company. They were expected to provide their own horses although they did receive a few British armaments. Their duties included carrying dispatches, long range patrols, calling in militia men and pursuing enemy raiders. Under command of his father, Thomas, the Sheriff of Niagara, Merritt and his troop were assigned to guard duty along the Niagara River. He was asked to join Brock at Detroit but was delayed and hence arrived after the capture of Fort Detroit. Nevertheless, he was awarded the special Detroit Medal. At the Battle of Queenston Heights, Merritt fought alongside Brock and years later was instrumental in the erection of Brock’s Monument.

The Dragoons were briefly disbanded in February 1813, but Merritt was instructed to raise a troop of cavalry again in March and become its Captain. During the American occupation of Niagara in 1813, the Dragoons were involved in a number of skirmishes with the United States Forces and also fought at the Battle of Stoney Creek in June.

When the Town was burnt by the United States in December, Merritt saw a glare in the sky from Twelve Mile Creek. Upon his approach, he described it as “nothing but heaps of coal and the streets full of furniture that the inhabitants had been fortunate enough to get out of their homes.”

Merritt fought at the Battle of Lundy’s Lane in July 1814 and was captured. He remained a prisoner until the end of the war. Afterwards, Merritt returned to farming and was involved in the mercantile trade in Niagara. Merritt is famous for promoting the Welland Canal between Lakes Erie and Ontario which bypassed Niagara Falls and the Portage Road.

Article from newspaper: Saturday Night, February 23, 1929 Memorial to Hon. William Hamilton Merritt Few men played a more important role in the history of Canadian development than the famous financier and pioneer of transportation, Hon. William Hamilton Merritt, of St. Catharines, Ont. On Dec. 6th, a statue of him by the well known sculptor, Alfred Howell, was unveiled at that City with appropriate ceremonies. The unveiling was performed by Lady Pellatt, of Toronto, formerly miss Katherine Welland Merritt, and an historical address was delivered by Canon Cody of Toronto. Others on the platform were Mr. J.D. Wright, Mayor of St. Catharines, Charles A. Keefer, Ottawa, J.A. Cameron, Treasurer of the U.E. Loyalists Association, J.H. Ingersoll and Miss Emily Merritt, Toronto. Excerpts from The Standard, Saturday, December 5, 1987, Glimpses into our past, Recognition for Merritt It was 158 years ago last Friday that the Ann and Jane became the first ship to lock into what was then the new Welland Canal. But it took almost a century for St. Catharines to officially acknowledge William Hamilton Merritt's key role in building this now-famous statue as a tribute to "the father of the Seaway". (It was) a raw December day in 1925 during the official unveiling of the statue, located at what is now St. Paul Street West and McGuire Street, overlooking Twelve Mile Creek and the route of the first two Welland canals. The crowd included civic officials and members of the Merritt family. Upon Merritt's death in 1862, the St. Catharines Historical Society attempted to erect a monument in his honour. However, it was not until 1918 that enough money had been raised and a bronze statue was commissioned. Seven years later, this official dedication and unveiling took place.

The 10 Field Battery Cenotaph was erected by the 10th St. Catharines Field Battery, Royal Canadian Artillery. It was dedicated on December 6, 1964, to the members of the Royal Canadian Artillery and their ancestral artillery unit who died during service. December 6 was the 25th anniversary of the battery's entry into the war.

Lt.-Gen. Guy Simonds, CB, CBE, DSO, CD, unveiled the cenotaph. He was commander of the 1st Division of which the 10th Battery was part of when the battery landed in Sicily in 1943. The nine foot memorial was dedicated by Reverend Deane Johnson, who was the first padre of the Royal Canadian Artillery of the 1st Canadian Division when it was mobilized in September 1939.

The ceremony was part of a national reunion organized by the 10th St. Catharines Field Battery Association. The reunion committee prepared an anniversary souvenir booklet to help pay for the cenotaph which cost $1,000. There is an honour roll listing fourteen soldiers who lost their lives during the Second World War and inscribed on the two sides are the battles the battery participated in.

The four smaller stones were dedicated on Sunday, October 18, 1981 and cost $1,448.

The Watson Monument was erected by the people of St. Catharines in 1886 in memory of Private Alexander Watson, 90th Winnipeg Battalion Rifles, Canadian Volunteers, and his companions in arms, who fell in battle during the North West Resistance in the Northwest Territories, A.D., 1885.

Private Watson, F.Co., was wounded on May 12, 1885, in the last action of the North-West Resistance - the Battle of Batoche  - and died three days later. He was born in Toronto in 1858, but lived in St. Catharines the greater part of his life. About four years before the North-West Resistance, he moved to Winnipeg. He was the eldest son, but had an elder sister. Personally he was a generous, kind-hearted young man and a great favorite with everyone. He was unmarried, but was shortly to have led to the altar a very estimable young lady of Winnipeg.

On August 13, 1886, City Council had a special meeting and granted permission to the Watson Monument Memorial Committee to place the monument on the grounds in front of the City Buildings. The original intention was to place the memorial in the St. Catharines Victoria Lawn Cemetery, where he is laid to rest.

The monument was unveiled by Major General F.D. Middleton, C.B. on September 14, 1886, with hundreds in attendance. The deed was handed over to Mayor King from the Committee. It was erected in St. Catharines as Watson and his family were long resident of this community. The memorial stands about fifteen feet high and at the top is a statue of a soldier in the at-ease position, dressed in full uniform of the 90th Winnipeg Rifles. Each face of the pedestal was originally adorned with trophies which are no longer visible due to later conservation work on the monument. It was built by James Munro's Marble and Granite Works located at 193 St. Paul Street West in St. Catharines, Ontario.

Watson’s Memorial continued to be the only war memorial in the community for the rest of the 19th Century.  As such, when the community sent soldiers to participate in the Boer War in 1899, local soldiers who fell in that conflict were also memorialized on the side of Watson’s Monument.

In 1936, the Watson Memorial was moved from its original location to its current location on the James Street side of the property, when the new City Hall was built.

This memorial is dedicated to the citizens of Merritton who served and those who died in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War. It was erected by the Town of Merritton and dedicated on July 31, 1921. The statue is believed to have been carved by artist Emanuel Hahn.

St. Catharines is home to eight war memorials, dating as far back as 1886. When the Town of Merritton, Village of Port Dalhousie and Grantham Township joined with St. Catharines in 1961, so too did their war memorials.
