When he enlisted, he named a friend (he did not name close family members); it is therefore not possible to verify the information that was provided or add more details about his family background.

In France, Thomas had been deployed to the 22nd Battalion, but either because of a language issue or on his own request, he was transferred to the 24th Battalion one month later. With his new unit, he befriended Lindsay Calbeck (service number 1054648) and, in March 1918, as he apparently did not have close family, he named Evelyn Calbeck, his friend’s sister, as heiress. One month later, Lindsay Calbeck died in action, on 15 April 1918.

Thomas was severely wounded on 8 August 1918 at the Battle of Amiens and was evacuated to England one week later. He died there after three days.

  • Sherbrooke Monument– Cover of the original program distributed at the unveiling of the Sherbrooke WWI memorial on November 7th, 1926, and two images of the monument.   The monument was designed by Mr. G. W. Hill of Montreal, Quebec with bronze figures cast in Belgium and granite from the Stanstead district.  The bronze Memorial tablet lists 249 names.
