Barry Murphy has devoted countless hours of professional expertise to honouring Canada’s naval history through his volunteer work on the Battle of the Atlantic Memorial in London, Ontario.
A professional landscape architect, Barry has been an integral member of the Battle of the Atlantic Memorial Committee for over a decade. From the outset, he took the initiative to lead the design and construction planning of the memorial. His contributions have included site surveying, landscape and memorial design, and sourcing high-quality materials. Barry played a key role in securing donations of labour, plants, trees and fixtures, and successfully engaged both local and national construction firms to volunteer their services. Thanks to his leadership, the site’s accessibility, surrounding gardens, and overall design have been significantly enhanced.
Barry’s involvement has been essential to the project’s progress. Ground was broken in fall 2024, and he has remained actively engaged throughout the construction phase, working diligently to ensure the memorial is completed in time for the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic in May 2025.
Beyond the memorial, Barry is an active member of the Naval Association of Canada, where he helps organize and support commemorative ceremonies. He has also lent his design expertise to the Byron Legion, assisting in the development of a new memorial to honour Canada’s Veterans.
Barry Murphy’s dedication, creativity and leadership have left a lasting mark on how Canada remembers its naval heroes. His work ensures that future generations will have a meaningful place to reflect on the sacrifices made during the Battle of the Atlantic and beyond.
