Dawn McIlmoyle

Dawn McIlmoyle, a former Naval Signalman in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) (1991-1993) and an independent advocate for survivors of sexual harassment and misconduct, has been a symbol of hope and resilience for over three decades (33 years). She has worked tirelessly to change the culture within the CAF, becoming a voice for countless women and men who have experienced sexual harassment and misconduct.

In 1998, Dawn’s feature on the cover of McLean’s Magazine issue “Rape in the military” marked a turning point for women in the Canadian Armed Forces. Her courage inspired many to share their stories. She has been a pillar in the women Veterans’ community. She instituted a 1-800 number to provide a safe space for both women and men to share their experiences and build stronger bonds. Her advocacy work led her to testify at the Standing Committee on the Status of Women and the Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs, pushing for more safeguards and gender-based policies.

In addition to her advocacy, Dawn expresses her resilience through poetry, art and photography, encouraging others to find creative outlets for their trauma. Her dedication to the women Veterans community and her persistent pursuit of justice make her an outstanding example of service and commitment. Her story continues to inspire and open the gate for more Veterans to come forward and share their experiences.
