Timothy Robert Groulx

Captain (Retired) Timothy Groulx was the driving force behind the 52nd (New Ontario) Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force Monument, which was dedicated on 21 September 2019 in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The monument commemorates the 743 Canadians from North Western Ontario who were killed during the First World War while serving with the Canadian Expeditionary Force 52nd (New Ontario) Battalion.

Timothy served for 10 years as an officer in the Army Cadets before serving with the Lake Superior Scottish Regiment for a period of six years. Timothy led the four-year project to create the 52nd (New Ontario) Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force memorial from conceptualization to consecration. He showed dedication and professionalism in bringing the history of the Canadians of North Western Ontario and their role in Canada’s coming of age during the Great War to life. This project has created educational opportunities for youth and the community all while highlighting the importance of the military history of North Western Ontario. It has also brought great honour to North Western Ontario, ensuring that the members of Canadian Expeditionary Force in the 52nd (New Ontario) Battalion and their accomplishments are commemorated and remembered.

For this project, Timothy spearheaded the design, fundraised more than $100,000 and partnered with the Alumni Association of Lakehead University to create an interpretive element to the site, ensuring educational opportunities for youth and the community at large. Timothy’s dedication and attention to detail during this project was paramount in its success.

Timothy has also served on the Canadian Forces Liaison Council and the Lake Superior Scottish Regiment Senate.
