For more than 25 years, Mr. De Meester has devoted an extraordinary amount of time, energy and personal resources to researching, commemorating and educating others about Canada’s contribution to the liberation of Belgium and the Netherlands.
Since childhood, he has actively researched the events of the Second World War, conducted interviews with Veterans and local witnesses, collected historical artifacts, and documented the stories of those who experienced the conflict firsthand. Over the years, this lifelong passion evolved into a sustained commitment to ensuring that the sacrifices of Canadian soldiers are not forgotten.
A particularly significant aspect of Mr. De Meester’s contribution has been his leadership in organizing annual liberation commemorations in Essen and Kalmthout. In 2010, he became actively involved in organizing liberation celebrations and commemorative vehicle columns. Under his guidance, these commemorations increasingly emphasized the role of Canadian forces in liberating the region and highlighted the often-overlooked Battle of the Scheldt.
One of Mr. De Meester’s most significant achievements was his role in the creation of the Canadian Peace Monument in Essen. Recognizing that the community lacked a dedicated memorial acknowledging the sacrifices of Canadian soldiers, he worked tirelessly with local partners and supporters to advocate for the project and bring it to fruition. His efforts culminated in the inauguration of the monument in 2019 during the 75th anniversary of the liberation.
Over more than two decades, Mr. De Meester has demonstrated exceptional leadership, dedication and perseverance in preserving the memory of Canadian Veterans.
