Dedication plaque

[plaque/plaque] 9e ÉCOLE DE BOMBARDEMENT ET DE TIR
MONT-JOLI

9th BOMBING AND GUNNERY SCHOOL
1941-1945

Prior to the Second World War, Canada, with the help of
other Commonwealth countries, instituted a gigantic air
training program which profoundly transformed aviation
in this country.

Almost 100 schools for airmen were constructed through-
out Canada. The 9th Bombing and Gunnery School, opened
in Mont-Joli in December 1941, was the largest and trai-
ned more than 6000 airgunners in its time. Composed of
74 buildings, 150 planes and 3000 airmen, this school of
the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan
made a significant contribution to the histo-
ry of the region.

Over the years, the military installations
were gradually replaced by multifunctional
airport facilities: Mont-Joli airport was, in
turn a bombing and gunnery school, an air-
port for the Dew line and a regional airport.
The airport always been central to the eco-
nomical and aeronautical developments of
eastern Québec.

This monument is dedicated to the memory of all officers
and airmen who were stationed at the 9th Bombing and
Gunnery School, the origin of the Mont-Joli Regional Air-
port.

Presented on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the
Mont-Joli Regional Airport, Friday August 23rd, 1991.
