The Old Soldier, War of 1812 Memorial was erected by the British Army and Navy Veterans' Association. It honours the dead of the War of 1812 and was erected on the site of an old burial ground used between 1794 and 1863 for soldiers and their families from nearby Fort York.

The cornerstone was laid on July 1, 1902, and featured a time capsule, including newspapers, coins, and other documents of the day. Veterans of several wars were on hand for the ceremony, including those who had served in the Crimean War, Second Opium War, India’s First War of Independence, Second Anglo-Aghan War, Fenian Raids, North-West Rebellion, and the South African War. The official unveiling was on July 5, 1907, after nearly 20 years of planning and fundraising.

The memorial was designed and constructed by Walter Seymour Allward. He designed a bronze half-length figure of an old one-armed soldier in uniform of 1812, holding his military cap, the George IV medal on his chest and the end of one empty sleeve pinned up. Allward emphasizes the Veteran's powerful response to the suffering caused by war and the experience of the misery of war is reflected in his haunted expression and pose.

On 4 March 1919, the Women's Patriotic League decided to use their money for a library as a memorial to the Swansea men who saw active service in the Great War. The Swansea Memorial Public Library Association formed on 30 September and the Swansea Memorial Public Library opened on 30 November 1919 in the Swansea Public School on Windermere Avenue. The library was dedicated to the 170 Swansea residents who enlisted in the First World War, and the 22 who did not return.

In 1959, the library was relocated to Swansea Town Hall at 95 Lavinia Avenue.

In 1866, University College at the University of Toronto commemorated the three students killed at the Battle of Ridgeway with a memorial stained glass window erected at the front of convocation hall and made possible by University College contributors. The window was destroyed in the 1890 fire, and replaced in 1910 by the memorial window in East Hall.

The Toronto militia volunteers were fighting Irish-American Fenian insurgents who had invaded Canada near Fort Erie in the hopes of holding Canada ransom for Irish independence. Between 1866 and 1871, this group raided Canadian territory from New Brunswick to Manitoba. Nine riflemen from Toronto’s The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada were killed, including three University of Toronto students. The entire city shut down for the funeral procession to the Necropolis.

This plaque is one of numerous memorials erected on the University of Toronto campus in the aftermath of the Great War (later called the First World War). It commemorates the men of East House who gave their lives in that conflict. It was erected by the fellow members. The place where the plaque hangs was, at that time, an exterior wall of East House.

East House was a residence for men of various U of T faculties. Along with neighbouring North House and South House, the buildings were originally called the Devonshire residences. During the First World War, the buildings were utilized by the Royal Flying Corps. During the Second World War, the buildings were used as an evacuation centre for children from England, and then as a training centre for the air force. In the mid-1950’s,  a new level of governance came into being to oversee the three residences and the name of “Devonshire House” was officially adopted.

The residences were closed in 1997, and as part of an architectural renovation completed in 2000, the buildings were brought together under one roof into a new complex for the Munk Centre for International Studies, subsequently named the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy. The plaque, formerly exterior, is now an interior plaque. It hangs behind the John W. Graham Library, facing a hallway of the Munk School.
